Poetry and Communication: A Class with Stephen Dobyns
One begins a poem for oneself and finishes it for the reader. Poetry is a form of communication and this class will focus on how a poem communicates in terms of clarity, structure, pacing and sound. Anton Chekhov wrote that talent was the ability to distinguish between the important and unimportant. As a class, we will consider what this means and how it may be achieved. Stephen Dobyns is the author of 14 books of poetry, 23 novels and two books on writing poetry. He has taught at several colleges and universities and is the recipient of numerous awards.
His latest book of poetry, The Day's Last Light Reddens the Leaves of the Copper Beech, has just been published by BOA Editions. Space in very limited in this 1 ½ hour class; registration is required.
